Creating a circular economy within Westpac.

Overview

Westpac's operations are moving from a linear ‘take, make, waste’ model to a circular ‘borrow, use, reuse, return’ approach.

In our headquarters in Auckland’s Britomart Precinct we have created our own circular system:

  • Vegetable, herb and flower gardens on the balconies are used by our café and by our bees in our building. We have more than 20 varieties of plants.
  • We have partnered with Bees Up Top, a social enterprise where 80% of profits go to rescuing bees, installing beehives that pollinate our veggie gardens and the green spaces in the inner-city.
  • We have a variety of recycling bins, including for soft plastics and alkaline batteries.
  • Used coffee grounds are taken home by employees for use in their garden or compost.
  • Worm farms convert food waste into fertiliser for our herb and vegetable gardens.
  • Reusable cups have replaced all disposable coffee cups with all other takeaway packaging and cutlery is commercially compostable.

Green buildings

We have two 'Green Star’ five-star-rated buildings: Takutai Square in Auckland and The Terrace in Christchurch.

Christchurch HQ, The Terrace, building includes:

  • Reusable cups replacing all disposable coffee cups.
  • All café takeaway packaging and cutlery, paper towels and umbrella bags are commercially compostable.
  • All lights are controlled by movement sensors – so they automatically switch off when no one's around.
  • Energy efficient glass to reduce the need for heating and cooling.
  • The presence of two artesian wells to reduce energy needed for heating and cooling.
  • Rubber flooring is made of recycled car tyres and the blade hand dryers in all washrooms are powered by solar cells. All these features either save power directly or recycle waste.
