Helping small business thrive.

Growing SMEs

Small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) account for one third of all New Zealand businesses and contributed over $153 billion to the domestic economy in the 2018 financial year.

Westpac created five hour-long Managing Your Money sessions for this sector, covering Getting Your Business Started, Business Cash Flow Foundations, Business Planning, Understanding Financial Statements and Managing Growth. These are currently being piloted.

“Customers appreciated that Westpac is adding value by running educational workshops. I asked a few whether they thought these workshops would be beneficial and the response included participants asking for more workshops with more topics, so this is a great start!”

Now into its fifth year, Westpac’s Business Growth Grants programme recognises and rewards businesses with a vision for growth.

  • We welcome applications from SMEs that have been operating successfully with an annual turnover of up to $10m, regardless of whether they're a Westpac customer.
  • The six regional winners attend the Nurture Change Business Retreat in Fiji and receive an expert business mentoring package (including HR, legal and accounting advice). One overall winner receives a grant valued at $50,000.
  • 2019 winner of the $50,000 prize was Zeffer from Hawkes Bay. Zeffer has grown a range of ciders on both the domestic and international market. Judges praised their rapid growth over the last 10 years while retaining a sustainable model.
"The growth grant prize money is going to go towards accelerating our launch in Australia."
