Westpac supports Duffy Books in Homes to help children from low decile schools and early childhood centres fall in love with reading. Over the past year, Duffy Books in Homes has distributed more than 500,000 new books to children across Aotearoa.
In June 2020, Westpac and Duffy Books in Homes donated 1,000 children’s books to the children of essential workers at Middlemore Hospital. The books were specifically given to non-clinical essential workers at the hospital who have children at home and who worked through the COVID-19 lock-down period.
Nalini Sharma, who is a cleaner of Middlemore Hospital’s Ward Six, has two children aged seven and 18.
“My 18-year-old son has been reading Duffy books since he was eight and it taught him to love reading. He just started his first year at university and still loves to read, so now I’m giving my seven-year-old the Duffy books,” she said.
